Last night at dinner I was talking to my husband about making my own all purpose cleaner out of nontoxic household items and he looked at me and said: "What is going on? Have you been hit with a hippie stick?"
I laughed at his question. I've never been the least bit "hippie" or "crunchy" as they say. But since having my 2 children I've found myself moving more in that direction - it started with breastfeeding my older son. And he was such a fussy baby, I learned about baby wearing and now have a different carrier for every day of the week. And now my second son is here and he isn't the best sleeper in the world, so we've been cosleeping for at least part of the night. I was able to convince my husband to let me cloth diaper the baby. For me, it was about not putting thousands of diapers into the landfill for the next 500 years. But I got my husband on board by showing him the thousands of dollars we'd save over the next 2 years by NOT buying disposable diapers.
I recently purchased my first cloth diapers and I am not-so-patiently waiting for my first fluffy mail to arrive. I spent weeks researching cloth diapers and along the way I found myself being exposed to ideas and concepts that I had never thought of. I had heard about "green living" for years, but never thought it was something would fit into my lifestyle. Through my cloth diaper research I've discovered so many EASY ways to run a greener household. And for me personally, going green and living thrifty go hand in hand. I want to save money and do less damage to the environment. So what better way then to find simple ways to reuse and repurpose items we already have? I decided to start this blog to document this journey and share ideas with others for greener and thrifty living.
But as the title suggests, I'm not and will never been 100% crunchy. There are things I cannot give up. Like toilet paper. Yes, I'll use cloth wipes to wipe the baby's butt so we can save some money not buying disposable wipes, but I would never use them on mine. And shampoo. I like my hair to look and smell clean and I will always use shampoo. So while I'm working hard at living a greener life, I can assure you I will never be more than just a little crunchy around the edges.
